OK! Scratch everything I sent earlier today about end-of-year burnout — I can finally announce that my first book, Ladies of the Canyon, is coming soon from University of Texas Press’ American Music Series. 🏜️
Around this time last year, my GOAT Jessica Hopper reached out and asked if I was interested in writing a book on fashion — I’d had the idea (and research library) for Ladies of the Canyon for years but never thought it’d actually come to fruition. I kept looking at what Bob Dylan looked like in 1964 and what Bob Dylan looked like in 1979 and thought, “God, there’s a whole book in that.”
Very very thrilled to be working with Jessica + Casey Kittrell + a slew of other legends on this and I’m even more thankful to them for believing in this project. I’m in good company.
In the meantime, I’ll be sending out my usual fare, but I’m also going to be writing a little more, here, about the somewhat-mystifying ⭐ 𝒲𝓇𝒾𝓉𝒾𝓃ℊ 𝒜 ℬℴℴ𝓀 ⭐ process. I’ve found other writers’ craft newsletters (OTTESSA!) so invaluable, and I’d like to offer up my perspective on a) writing your first book and b) what goes into doing so much historical research, which I think could be v helpful for anybody trying to build their own little fashion knowledge repository. There’s also plenty that won’t make it into the final book, so I’d like to share some photos&anecdotes&weird things I’ve found as Ladies takes shape. There are some truly insane ‘70s Dylan outfits out there.
ANYWAYS — a dream come true, to say the least. Don’t know how any Christmas/Birthday1 present will ever top this. Do know that I will be posting through it as ever.
See you on Friday. ꩜
I was born on December 29th, and, in the words of Chris Fleming: “Anybody born between Christmas and New Years’ is basically a ghost.”
congratulations :)
CONGRATS SAVV!!!
