🍸 OFF-MENU 010 🍸: A Sudden Fit of Candor
What I'm loving this week: RIP Polly Mellen, elbow-length leather opera gloves, and the Luigi Mangione of it all
Hello, sailor. Welcome back to OFF-MENU, a Friday round-up of the seven things I’ve been thinking about this past week, from oyster rings to Robert Altman’s Nashville, along with new things I’ve discovered (as recommended by you!).

Substack is doing a new thing where they’re giving away complimentary gift subscriptions for select newsletters — and Mermaid Café is one of those newsletters. It’s completely random, so I have zero control over who gets sent an offer, but a hint in the fine print: they’re targeting users who (a) are free subscribers (sorry, paid sailors), (b) already have Substack user accounts, (c) engage with this publication, and (d) must not already have the Substack app installed on their device. Guess they really want you to read Mermaid Café outside of your e-mail inbox.

(I know this because I was a tweenage girl flicking through the racks of Charlotte Russe and Wet Seal.) They’re hard to describe — they’re made to look as vintage as vintage can be, faded, hazy, usually pressed in corduroy or chalky denim. I think they’re due for a non-Reformation reappraisal. Might you consider these darling Sézane trousers? Or these vintage Guess floral shorts that I would’ve worn with razor-torn tights and Dr. Martens?
